SACKVILLE, N.B. – In 2019 Live Bait Theatre is presenting, along with several partners, a series of events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the train in Sackville.
The Intercolonial Railway was Canada’s first national infrastructure project and was initiated during the lead-up to confederation in 1867 as one of the conditions for the Maritime Provinces to join. It began construction in 1867, and arrived in Sackville on November 30, 1869.
The year-long celebration began on Feb. 16. The Tantramar Heritage Trust presented a well-attended talk by Susan Amos titled “The Intercolonial Railway: Ties That Bind” to celebrate Heritage Day. Other upcoming events in the celebration include: a “Model Train Show: Bridging Time – Sackville NB – 1869-2019” presented by the Maritime Federation of Model Railroaders and hosted by the Town of Sackville on June 1; “Sackville’s Railways – A Guided Walking Tour” presented by the Town of Sackville from May to August; “The Intercolonial: An Historical Program of Community Music Celebrating Tantramar in 1869” presented by the Sackville Citizen's Band on July 6; a display at the Boultenhouse Museum titled “The Transformative Impact of the Railway on Sackville, NB, 1869-1879” in the fall; a “Junctions: Art and Craft Traditions of the Tantramar” workshop presented by the Sackville Art Hive; presentation of the community play “The Intercolonial: Ties That Bind” by the Marsh Troupe in November; and creation of a train-themed musical CD “150 Years Since the Train Came to Sackville,” with a launch concert, by Janet Crawford and Ray Legere.
