Just before midnight last night, Aug. 8, fire damaged the former Rollways Motel on Church Street. The building has been empty for more than a year.
It’s the third fire to take place on this corner block this week. Two fires on Saturday and Sunday damaged a building at the corner of Drummond and Church streets, just across from the motel.
The recent string of suspicious fires are becoming a major concern for residents of community. The Aug. 8 fire was the first to lead to a neighboring building being evacuated while firefighters from Springhill, Southampton and Oxford attended the blaze.
This summer, there has also been a suspicious fire at a vacant building on Fir Street and another vacant property on McGee Street caught fire twice, on two consecutive nights.
