The Blackville, N.B. detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police will be investigating a death at the Atlantic Institution in Renous as a homicide.
The RCMP were called to the correctional facility Monday morning after a 27-year-old inmate had been found badly injured in his cell. He was taken to the infimary and was pronounced dead.
The RCMP's Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation, which is ongoing. An autopsy will be performed to determine the victim's cause of death.
On Tuesday, the Telegram reported that 27-year-old Calvin Kenny died at the same correctional facility on Monday morning. Kenny was serving a 12 1/2-year sentence for his part in the 2016 death of Steven Miller in Conception Bay South.

As reports emerge that convicted killer Calvin Kenny has died in prison in New Brunswick, his sister has posted an emotional public message on social media, warning of the dangers of drugs.
Sources say Kenny, 27, died Monday in Atlantic Institution, where he was serving a 12 1/2-year sentence for manslaughter. Correctional Service Canada has not yet responded to a request for comment, and the cause of death is unclear.
“We don’t know any details of what happened, but he’s gone and now there’s nothing anyone can do to bring him back,” his sister posted on Facebook Monday evening.
She said Kenny had experienced a good childhood, but had fallen in with “the wrong crowd” and started using drugs.
“My parents did their best … but drugs change a person,” she wrote. “(They) change who a person is and their decision-making skills no longer seem to work.
“Our family has to go on without a brother, son, grandson, and his little boy (will) never get to hug his father. Please, do not even touch a drug.
“If we can change someone else’s future or save someone else’s life, this post is worth it. Drugs will lead to nothing but the wrong crowd, trouble, jail … and possible death.”
Kenny was one of four men convicted in connection with the July 2016 death of 25-year-old Steven Miller in C.B.S. Miller had been kidnapped from his home in the middle of the night — and the house was then set on fire — before his body was found stabbed and beaten in a residential driveway in Kelligrews hours later.
Kyle Morgan was sentenced to a year behind bars for being an accessory after the fact, while Kenny and Chesley Lucas, who both pleaded guilty to manslaughter, forcible confinement, arson and robbery, were given 12 1/2-year jail sentences. Their lawyers filed an appeal of the sentence, which has yet to be heard.
The fourth man, Paul Connolly, will appear in court next week, when a date will be set for his sentencing. He has pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter, forcible confinement, robbery and breaching court orders.
