CORNER BROOK, N.L. — Minor hockey coach Jamie Brake of Meadows has been charged with assault.

Brake, who was the coach of the Corner Brook Royals bantam all-star team, was one of two men involved in an altercation in the parking lot of the Corner Brook civic centre March 5.

Brake was not behind the bench to coach the all-star team when it competed in its provincial championship tournament during the Easter break.

The minor hockey association has since confirmed Brake was suspended from his coaching duties at the time of the Easter tournament, pending the outcome of the prosecution of the charge.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, which had previously said the investigation was ongoing, confirmed two weeks ago that it had filed a single charge in the investigation. The police still would not confirm who had been charged at the time because the information outlining the alleged offence had yet to be filed with the provincial court.

The charge against 43-year-old Brake, who is the mayor of Meadows, was not sworn at provincial court until this week and his matter is now scheduled to be called for election and plea June 11.

This past season, Brake also coached the Western Knights of the provincial minor midget hockey league and was assistant coach with the provincial boys’ hockey team that competed at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta.

The Western Star has a longstanding practice of not naming complainants in police matters.
