On a recent visit to Sydney I was devasted to learn of a fire that partially destroyed the Gallivan house on Victoria Rd.

This is the house that raised a large family who were very successful, including Danny Gallivan. For over 30 years, Danny was the voice of the Montreal Canadiens. He was considered one of the greatest sports announcers in Canada and for this he is honoured in the Hockey Hall Of Fame in Toronto.

Years ago, when this induction took place, Sydney should have applied for a Historical Heritage Grant to preserve this home. Such recognition and pride in one of our own could have been shared with people from all over the world who visit Sydney each year.

Even now, if the house is demolished, the city can still apply for a grant to at least erect a stone on the property depicting the contribution Danny made to hockey in Canada.

Many of my friends and relatives in Sydney share my views on this subject. I hope those in authority will take up this cause and pay Danny his due for putting Sydney, and Whitney Pier in particular, on the map of Canada.
