Colwell wins 2018 championship golf title

SACKVILLE, N.B. – Travis Colwell recently captured his second straight Sackville Golf and Country Club men’s championship.

Colwell shot smooth rounds of 75-71 for a 36-hole score of 2-over-par 146. He was a runaway champion of the event, finishing 14 strokes ahead of Todd Hicks and Wade Ward, who tied for second with a two-day total 160.

This year’s win was also Colwell's seventh victory over the past 10 seasons.

Joe Carpenter, a member of the junior development program, turned in a low net score of 142.

The SGCC will be honouring two of its long-serving contributors with life memberships on Sunday, Sept. 23. Sackville Sports Hall of Fame inductee Earl Thompson, and long-time course manager, supervisor, and multiple club champion Kevin Read, will both be recognized for their outstanding commitment and contributions over several decades to the Sackville Golf and Country Club.

The recognition event to honour Read and Thompson will occur in conjunction with a fun, mixed, nine-hole, shotgun scramble that will be held starting at 12:30 on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 23. People wanting to play and/or just take part in the recognition ceremony, are encouraged to show up at the clubhouse by 12:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome, and this event will take place rain or shine. There will be no tournament entry fee for members, and greens fee players can take advantage of a reduced rate of $10 for the round. The tournament will be followed by food, beverages, prizes, special live music, and honorary presentations to Read and Thompson.

Another special club moment was recently enjoyed on Sept. 5, when club member Byron Estabrooks, in front of several fellow golfers, scored an ace on the 150-yard, par-three seventh hole.

For more information on the ceremony, or to sign up for the scramble, contact the club staff at 506-536-3437 or visit the course.
