SACKVILLE, N.B. – The Tantramar Titans are proving they aren’t ready to give up on defending their championship just yet.
This past weekend, the men’s hockey team travelled to Dalhousie to partake in the Dalhousie AQV Invitational Tournament.
The first game was on Friday afternoon against Roland Pepin of Campbellton. The Titans came out on top of the exciting back-and-forth affair by a score of 4-2. Game MVP Oliver Longpre scored in the first and had another into an empty net to lead the charge, while Jessie Estabrooks scored in the second and Brady Senior lobbed one over the goalie’s trapper into the top corner. Justin Vogels had two assists and Estabrooks and Seth Smith added single helpers. Goaltender Sam Tower was stellar in the win.
Later on Friday, the Titans locked horns with the Riverview Royals. The Titans had no answer for the Royals’ speed and size and got manhandled by a score of 5-1. Longpre continued his sniping ways, scoring the only marker for the Titans in the dying seconds of the game, and Cory Gould played a solid two-way game in earning MVP honours. Noah Boyd was sharp and made key saves throughout, but RHS proved to be too much on this night.
On Saturday, the Titans found themselves in a do-or-die against the hometown AQV Cyclones and came out flying in what was perhaps their most complete game of the year in a 6-0 triumph. Jacob Estabrooks netted two goals, including a gorgeous wrister from the point 22 seconds in. Riley Estabrooks – playing part time as a defenseman – scored on the power play, while Longpre scored in his third straight game, coming out of the penalty box on a feed from Vogels. Eian Cadman hit the scoresheet before the end of the second and Vogels put it completely out of reach with a tally in the third. Vogels set up two more, Smith had one assist and Riley Estabrooks, Jax Wells and Jory Parsons had one helper apiece. Game MVP Tower continued his dominance of the Northern Conference with a convincing shutout.
Unfortunately, the Titans ran into ENS from Bathurst in a semifinal on Sunday and had no pulse, losing 5-0. Noah Boyd earned game MVP honours, making several big saves.
The Titans losses were against top tier AAA teams and their wins were against the top AA teams in the Northern Conference. AQV and Roland Pepin are well aware that for anyone to take the championship AA banner from the Titans they had better be prepared for a battle.
Coming up for TRHS is an away game in St. Stephen on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. and a home game at the TMVCC on Sunday at 5:15 p.m. against St. Malachy’s Saints. As for all regular season games, all minor hockey players wearing their team sweaters gain free admission.
Titans set to host alumni game
The Tantramar Regional High School Titans men’s hockey team is set to host an alumni game on Jan. 19.
Like previous years, the evening will start with the “Legends” game at 6 p.m. followed by the “Young Guns” at 7:30 p.m. The Titans are hoping to have four full squads participate again this year.
Throughout the evening there will be a silent auction with many great items to bid on. The Titans will also be selling tickets on a travel voucher and of course their Chase the Ace 50/50 draw.
