WOLFVILLE, N.S. — The Cape Breton University Capers women’s basketball team suffered an 80-69 loss to the Acadia Axewomen in Atlantic University Sport action Sunday.

Jayda Veinot led Acadia’s attack with a game-high 35 points. Rachel Clouatre-Trudeau followed with 12 and Mia Roberts added 10.

For the Capers, MacKenzee Ryan led her team with 13 points, while both Hailey MacLeod and Maia Watling added 10 apiece. Audrey Rankin led all players with 11 rebounds. The Capers lost the game despite leading 33-25 at halftime.

Saturday, the Capers opened the 2019-20 season with a 92-71 loss to the Axewomen. Veinot led Acadia with 26 followed by Haley McDonald with 25.

For the Capers, Ryan scored 22 and Monique Calliste added 15.

The Capers men opened the season on Saturday with a 101-92 setback to the Axemen.

Jacques Lukusa led Acadia and all scorers with 26 points, while Rowan Power added 20 and Alex Muise chipped in 17. The Axemen won the game despite trailing 48-44 at the half.

Ibrahim Gosselin-Diawara scored 20 to pace the Capers. C.J. Bennett came off the bench to score 18 and Chris Hankins added 14.

Sunday, the Capers men needed overtime to clip the Axemen 83-81.

Osman Omar led the way with 22 points followed by Gosselin-Diawara with 15. Marcus Upshaw had the hot hand for Acadia with 17 points.

The Capers next play this coming Friday and Saturday when they host the Memorial Sea-Hawks for their home-opening weekend at Sullivan Field House.
