Nominations have opened for 2020’s Kraft Hockeyville program.
This year’s nominations will close Feb. 9 at 11:59 p.m. EST and are open to communities across Canada who wish to upgrade their local hockey arenas in need of repair and refurbishment.
So far, Kraft Hockeyville in its 14-year history has awarded $3.5 million to 81 communities and held 13 NHL pre-season games in eight different provinces. Although a Cape Breton community has never won it nor been a finalist, a Nova Scotia arena, Deuville Rink in Salmon River did win in the contest’s first year. Mainland communities have also been finalists six times, including Lawrencetown (2010), Yarmouth (2012), Amherst and Kingston (2014), Middleton (2015) and Tatamagouche (2016).
This year’s grand prize winner will have the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game and receive $250,000 for their local arena’s upgrades, along with the title. Three community finalists will get $25,000 each for arena upgrades and both the winner and each of the three runner-up communities will receive $10,000 to buy new hockey equipment for there minor hockey programs, thanks to the NHLPA Goals and Dreams Fund.
To win Kraft Hockeyville 2020, communities must have a compelling story that shows their passion and spirit for hockey.

The stories we hear are emotional, powerful, and connect us all,” says Matt Bruce, senior brand manager, Kraft Heinz Canada. “It’s clear that communities build hockey and hockey builds communities. We want to shine a light on stories that have truly brought communities and people together from all walks of life.”
While most communities have an arena, maintaining it can be costly. According to the 2019 Canadian Infrastructure Report Card, one in three recreational or cultural facilities will require investment over the next decade.
