Sydney soccer player wins University Cup with Gee-Gees

SYDNEY, N.S. — A Cape Breton soccer player captured the 2019 FISU University World Cup with the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday.

Rebecca LeBlanc of Sydney was a member of the championship winning team which defeated Paulista University of Brazil 1-0, to claim the international tournament in Jinjiang, China.

The Ontario club posted a 5-0 record at the tournament with wins over Donghua University of China, Siberian Federal University of Russia, College of Asian Scholars of Thailand and Beijing Normal University of China, before facing Paulista in the final. 

In her rookie season with the Gee-Gees this year, LeBlanc appeared in 12 games, posting two assists and six shots on goal.
