We’re not sure how tough Swiss laws are when it comes to theft, but Newfoundlander Nathan Young might want to find out.
The 18-year-old from Torbay has skipped Canada to three wins in as many games in the mixed team curling competition at the 2020 World Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland, and he and teammates Emily Deschenes of Ottawa, Jaedon Neuert of Winnipeg and Lauren Rajala of Sudbury, Ont., have done it with a lot of steals.
In fact, of the 19 points the Canadian team has scored in going 3-0, no less than 13 have been stolen. That includes a 6-3 win over South Korea On Sunday when Young and Co. stole four points en route to victory.
That result leaves the Canadians — who had defeated Russia 7-6 in an extra end and Poland by a 6-4 score earlier in the tourney — alone in first place in their six-team A Pool.
There are 24 teams overall in the event, divided into four pools. The top two finishers in each pool advance to Wednesday quarter-finals.
Canada has games against Spain (1-2) today and Estonia (0-3) on Tuesday, and a win in either would guarantee Canada a playoff berth, but two wins would likely provide them with a more favourable cross-over quarter-final.
