SACKVILLE, N.B. — The Tantramar boys hockey Titans are looking to add another banner to their collection.
On Friday they played Game 1 of the best-of-three against St. Stephen and came home with a victory. After a scoreless first period, the Titans surprised the Spartans with two shorthanded goals to take the lead and held off St. Stephen the rest of the way, taking the game by a score of 4-2.
Longpre scored the two shorthanded goals, Justin Vogels had a goal and an assist and Mason Prescott hit the scoresheet late in the third. Seth Smith played heavy minutes and set up two, and Joe Carpenter and Connor Cadman also had an assist each. Sam Tower provided great goaltending and gave the Titans a chance throughout, with TRHS being outshot by a wide margin.
Game 2 of the Southern Conference AA championship was played Tuesday in Sackville, with the Titans coming out on top 4-2, winning the series, claiming the banner and advancing to regionals.
Regionals will be a best-of-three, with the top seeds from the Western Conference. The remaining teams in the Western Conference are Woodstock, Nackawick, Carlton North and South Vic. If the Titans win the round against the yet to be determined Western team, they will qualify for provincials, which will be hosted by Carlton North in the Hartland/Florenceville area where they will play a round-robin with the other winner from the West/South conferences, along with the top two teams from the Northern Conference.
After a slow start to the season the Titans are playing spirited hockey despite playing with a short bench. The vets have stepped up and provided great leadership and the rookies have found their roles. The team has grown into a hard-working, lunch-bucket gang. Combine that with a never-say-die attitude and they are perfectly suited for the long road that the high school hockey playoff format is.
