Funding infusion allows AWI to re-open facility to injured wildlife

They were preparing to close their doors for good this week to injured and orphaned wildlife but a last-minute funding reprieve from the provincial government means Barry Rothfuss and Pam Novak can stay in business - at least for now.

New Brunswick's Department of Natural Resources came through last week with $50,000 in funding for the Atlantic Wildlife Institute, a grant that will help the facility with operational costs at a time when private funding for the organization has hit an all-time low.

Tantramar Family resource centre now has its own home in Sackville Post a comment

The Tantramar Family Resource Centre now has a home at 94 Willow Lane.
TFRC’s early childhood and development co-director Sharon Hachey said having a physical space for the resource centre will allow for growth in terms of resources.
“Our goal of having a physical space is to have more visibility in town, to get more people talking about some of our goals and how they can contribute to it, whether through volunteering or financially.”
Although the space is small, it will allow for parents to drop in and also offer other services, Hachey said.

Local businesses on the move in Sackville's downtown district Post a comment

Several months after a Sackville marketing firm was forced to close its doors due to the sagging economy, a local entrepreneur has opened the building back up again, providing businesses with premium office space in a downtown location.

Sackville landlord Gordon Beal, who owns several other residential and commercial buildings in the Sackville area, recently purchased the former SGCI Communications building - a strikingly beautiful, three-storey structure across from Mount Allison University's swan pond.

Local film society carries on fading tradition of theatre experience Post a comment

It was a cold, snowy, blustery winter night in Sackville.

Three hundred people crammed into Vogue Cinema and waited for the projector to click on.

A Room With a View, an Edwardian drama starring Helena Bonham-Carter, was scheduled for that night as part of the Sackville film society's line-up.

But the blizzard stalled the movie's delivery.

Football Mounties honoured at annual awards night Post a comment

Should the stars be aligned in the correct order this fall, the Mounties could suddenly emerge as a strong contender in the Atlantic Universities Football Conference (AUFC).
You might ask “how come.” Well, it appears as though they could open camp in August minus only one key from the ‘09 lineup that, in spite of going winless, nevertheless put up some good offensive numbers and had some of the better players in the country in the line-up.
Gone for sure will be punter/kicker Olivier Eddie who gave the team field advantage, a threat to run on each punt and a strong leg that allowed him to lead the conference in scoring in 2008.
