Incumbent Mayor Smith pleased with support during first two terms
Jamie Smith is hoping to reclaim Sackville’s mayoralty in next week’s municipal election and is asking for residents to support him “to continue to build on our successes and to continue to plan for our future.”
During Monday night’s mayoralty debate at the civic centre, Smith said he is pleased with the confidence the citizens have shown in him in his first two terms as mayor.

Estabrooks seeking return to top spot on Sackville council
Pat Estabrooks is vying to return to the mayor’s chair following next week’s municipal election, a position she held in Sackville in the late 1990s, saying she has the “experience, the vision, dedication and time” that is required for the job.
“My definition of the job is this: to provide leadership, motivate council, generate ideas, be fiscally responsible, accountable, run an open council, welcome public input, and ensure that we have good discussion before making decisions,” said Estabrooks during Monday night’s mayoralty debate at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre. Program fills certain gaps
For people in the Atlantic provinces, where not many years ago a scarcity of jobs was the usual story, this bit of news comes as a 180-degree turnaround. Employers in parts of Canada, including this region, are now finding themselves depending on temporary foreign workers to get certain jobs done.
A House of Commons standing committee on citizenship and immigration hearing is touring the country providing hearings on immigration matters and will produce studies on the subject. (more)

Henry Richard works at his home studio on a painting of well-known Sackville athlete Hartley Estabro... » |

Despite career-ending injury, Richard still passionate about sports
There were fans sitting on the sidelines, at least 50 metres away, who heard the snap and crack that ended the playing days of Henry Richard, a young and promising athlete who, at the time, was a member of the Middle Sackville Lakers of the Sackville Senior Softball League.
During a recent interview at his home, Henry recalled the event as though it was yesterday.
"I was playing second base and Hartley Estabrooks was the centrefielder. An opposing hitter lined a soft one between us and there were those who felt we hadn't really given it our all. So the next batter hit an almost identical ball and Hartley and I took off as fast as we could in order to make an out.”
Neither saw each other until the very last second and so came the crash.
“His knee caught the inside of mine and I knew immediately that it was serious. Actually I think my spike caught in the ground which left my knee exposed." (more)

Head coach Steve LaLonde closes camp with further instructions for the summer and fall. |

Football Mountie coaches expecting improvement this season
It must have been a great success for it brought smiles to the face of defensive co-ordinator Peter Estabrooks - and that’s not always easy.
The Mountie spring camp, held at the Rocky Stone Field in Moncton over a five-day period, had all the coaches in an upbeat mood, for they observed a great improvement in the strength and speed of many of the 70 returning players.
As a matter of fact, head coach Steve LaLonde went so far as to say he felt the team at the camp was superior to the one of last October.
One of the bright spots that was missing last year was the running game. Moncton native Colin Weldon, who sat out last year to work, is returning and he showed he hasn’t lost a step. As a matter of fact, he looked bigger and stronger.
He, along with Andrew Hickey of Fredericton and Matt Pickett, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, should give quarterback Kelly Hughes something he was lacking in his arsenal - a bonafide ground attack. Hughes was left on his own and did very well, thank you, turning into one of the biggest ground gainers in the Atlantic Conference. (more)

The university federation question heavily debated during 1920s
Each year during the month of May, attention within the Tantramar region focuses on the annual convocation exercises at Mount Allison. With this in mind, it’s appropriate to revisit a controversial proposal for the consolidation of post-secondary education in the Maritimes.
Strange as it may seem, Mount Allison once “came close” to relocating in Halifax!
More recently, the suggestion of a possible amalgamation of UNB in Saint John (UNBSJ) with the local community college created considerable debate. It began with a special report released on Sept. 14, 2007, that recommended “a blending” of post secondary institutions in parts of the province, leading to the creation of “polytechnic institutes.”
The Oxford Dictionary provides a definition of the latter as: “institutions of higher education offering courses (at or below the degree level) mainly technical and vocational subjects.” (more)

National Hospice Palliative Care Week
This week (May 4 - 10) is national hospice palliative care week.
If you're wondering what "hospice palliative care" is, then you're the reason for this week (so read on). The goal of this week in May is to raise awareness about hospice palliative care.
So, what exactly is hospice palliative care? Well, it is a special kind of health care for people who are living with a terminal illness such as advanced heart disease or cancer.
If you have a life-threatening illness, there is still plenty that can be done to help you live as fully and comfortably as possible. Among medical professionals (e.g., doctors, nurses), "palliative care" generally means to provide relief from pain and other symptoms. "Hospice care" is typically understood as providing not only pain and symptom management (medical care), but also providing emotional, social, and practical support (compassionate care). (more)
