Roméo LeBlanc leaves lasting legacy in riding
He will long be remembered as a “man of the people,” a kind and considerate soul who carried himself through 27 years of political service with dignity and humility.
Roméo LeBlanc, a longtime Liberal MP, cabinet minister, senator and Canada’s first-ever Acadian governor general, died last Wednesday at the age of 81 following a lengthy illness.
But his legacy will certainly not soon be forgotten, especially by the people of the Westmorland-Kent (now Beausejour) riding he represented for more than a decade.
“He was a lion among men,” recalled Wallie Sears, a friend of LeBlanc’s and a longtime news correspondent in the region. (more)

Campaign mounting to keep local prison farm operating
Reg Tower has seen firsthand how beneficial farming has been to the hundreds of offenders who have come through the doors of Westmorland Institution.
During the past 20 years that he has worked at the institution in the village of Dorchester, he has witnessed hundreds of inmates developing skills they probably would not have acquired had it not been for the prison farm program there.
“Those guys take a lot of pride in taking care of those animals and also being able to feed themselves,” said Tower during a campaign rally last week at St. Ed’s Hall in Dorchester to keep the prison farm open. (more)

Youth raising funds, recruiting help to give back to boxing club
Bob Edgett has had a tremendous influence on hundreds of youngsters that have walked through the doors of his York Street boxing club over the past 55-plus years.
Now some of those teenagers are hoping to give back to their coach and mentor, even if just in a small way.
Nineteen-year-old Andy Hart, who has boxed at Bob’s club for more than five years now, said the aging facilities on York Street are in need of a major makeover and he is working to make that happen. (more)

Lower limit, safer highways?
Ottawa has a real opportunity to take another step toward stamping out impaired driving, but appears to be unwilling to do so for fears of the surge in impaired-driving charges before the courts. While it’s a legitimate concern, it would only make sense to toughen the laws to make it more difficult for impaired drivers to get on the road.
At issue is a proposal to lower the legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers from the present .08 to .05, the level medical science suggests represents the threshold at which the ability to operate a motor vehicle becomes sufficiently impaired to present a danger. (more)

Wheaton committed to enhancing lives of local youth
He has played, coached, refereed, managed, served on the executive and held the presidency of the Sackville Minor Hockey Club (SMHC) for six years; in other words, David Wheaton has done just about everything to enhance opportunities for young boys and girls to enjoy good clean competition.
But David Wheaton believes he is merely doing what any person who has had the experience of playing in the system should do -- give back something as part payment for the lessons learned and enjoyment received. (more)

Remembering the life and times of “Mr. Canada” - Bill Hamilton - Tantramar Flashback
Today (Wednesday)?has been officially designated as Canada Day. On July 1, 1867, the four colonies of Upper and Lower Canada, (now Ontario and Québec), New Brunswick and Nova Scotia became the Dominion of Canada.
What is not so well known in 2009 is that a native New Brunswicker was once dubbed by the media as “Mr. Canada.” I cannot think of a better way to mark Canada Day on the Tantramar, than to recall the career of this individual -- journalist and broadcaster John W. Fisher (1912-1981). (more)
